MADRID: The Spanish power grid operator REE REDE.MC announced on Tuesday that its initial analysis had ruled out cyberattack as the reason behind Monday’s statewide power outage that affected the majority of Spain and Portugal.
The worst blackout ever recorded in the Iberian Peninsula occurred Monday at 12:33 p.m. (1033 GMT), when lights went out in the majority of the two countries. The power only came back on in the evening.
Eduardo Prieto, the chief of system operations at REE, told a news briefing that a significant power-generating loss in southwest Spain had generated instability in the electrical system, which ultimately resulted in the system’s disconnection from the French grid.
According to him, there was a good chance that the impacted generation was solar, but it was not certain.
