Despite losing the majority government he had hoped for to assist him in negotiating tariffs with US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals were able to hold onto power in Monday’s election.
Pierre Poilievre, the head of the Conservative Party, acknowledged that Carney’s Liberals had won the election and promised that his party will hold the minority government accountable.
Votes were still being counted, but the Liberals were leading or elected in 164 electoral districts, or seats, followed by the Conservatives with 147.
To be able to govern without the backing of a smaller party, the Liberals would need to secure 172 seats in the House of Commons.
The Liberal victory depended on Shachi Kurl, president of the polling company Angus Reid Institute, who told Reuters.
