A judicial investigation into claims of political meddling in the prosecution of crimes committed during the apartheid era has been announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Three decades after white-minority rule ended, and following a lawsuit against Ramaphosa’s government by a group of survivors and victims’ relatives for alleged injustice, the statement was made.
Few of the crimes committed during the apartheid era, such as murder and torture, were brought to light by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which was established in 1996.
Ramaphosa is “determined that the true facts be established and the matter brought to finality,” according to a presidential statement announcing the fresh investigation.
