Third-party mediation has been anathema in the Indian foreign ministry for decades, especially in the long-running conflict with Pakistan over Kashmir.
The fact that US President Donald Trump, who is renowned for his unconventional diplomacy, has offended people in Delhi is therefore not shocking to those in the know.
After four days of intense cross-border fighting, he announced on social media on Saturday that India and Pakistan had reached an agreement on a “full and immediate ceasefire” mediated by the United States.
He subsequently stated in another post: “I will work with you both to see if, after a thousand years, a solution can be arrived at, concerning Kashmir.”
