The US Supreme Court criticized President Donald Trump’s administration for attempting to deport Venezuelan migrants without following the proper legal procedures and upheld its hold on Friday on his deportations using a 1798 legislation that has previously only been applied during times of war.
In a succinct, unsigned ruling, the justices agreed to the demand of the migrants’ lawyers, the American Civil Liberties Union, to keep the removals on hold for the time being. The administration’s deportations of scores of migrants detained at a Texas detention facility were temporarily halted by the court on April 19.
The Republican president’s immigration crackdown since taking office again in January includes Trump’s deportations.
