San Francisco: On Friday, a coalition of Republican and Democratic state lawyers urged Congress to oppose a moratorium on artificial intelligence regulation that was part of US President Donald Trump’s tax bill.
Leading lawyers from 40 states wrote a letter to congressional leaders pleading with them to reject the budget reconciliation bill’s addition of language prohibiting AI regulations.
“The impact of such a broad moratorium would be sweeping and wholly destructive of reasonable state efforts to prevent known harms associated with AI,” the letter reads.
“This bill will affect hundreds of existing and pending state laws passed and considered by both Republican and Democratic state legislatures.”
The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s amendment to the budget reconciliation measure prohibits states from doing so for ten years.
