In an effort to silence Republican opposition, US President Donald Trump’s congressional allies have been working through Tuesday night to approve a comprehensive tax and spending measure.
Several of Trump’s main demands are included in the plan, including cuts to government healthcare programs, more spending on border security and defense, and an extension of tax cuts that were initially passed in 2017 and the removal of tips and overtime wage taxes.
However, hard-line Republicans who seek more drastic expenditure cutbacks have blocked the agreement. Some party members, meanwhile, favor larger tax cuts.
According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the plan would increase the US national debt by roughly $2.3 trillion (£1.7 trillion) over the course of the following ten years.
