In response to a senior Indian minister’s warning that New Delhi would never reinstate the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan, a UN official said Monday that the UN emphasized the sharing of natural resources under treaties that have been fully agreed upon.
The 1960 treaty, which regulates the use of the Indus river system, was put into “abeyance” by India following the murder of 26 civilians in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir, in what New Delhi called a terror attack.
Through three rivers that start in India, the treaty ensured that 80% of Pakistan’s crops would have access to water.
Despite a truce, the agreement is still inactive even though Pakistan has flatly denied any role in the Pahalgam event.
