Ukrainian soldiers are still defending a small portion of territory inside Russia that they took nearly a year ago, according to the country’s senior military commander.
Ukraine unexpectedly invaded the Kursk area in August 2024, seizing about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory.
According to Oleksandr Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine, 10,000 Russian soldiers are trying to rebuff his men.
Ukraine still controls about 90 square kilometers (35 square miles) of the Kursk region, according to Syrsky on Sunday, despite Russia’s repeated claims that it had retaken the entire area.
