ISLAMABAD: In a significant move, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar of the Supreme Court (SC) has withdrawn from the Constitutional Bench’s hearing review motion in the matter involving the reserved seats.
The Supreme Court’s July 12 decision last year that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was entitled to reserved seats for women and minorities in the national and provincial assemblies has been challenged in review petitions filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
But because the National Assembly has not yet taken action and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has voiced concerns, implementation has delayed. This decision would greatly increase PTI’s parliamentary power if it were to be implemented.
