Washington: By limiting the ability of lone federal judges to halt presidential acts, the split US Supreme Court gave President Donald Trump a significant win on Friday.
In response to Trump’s attempt to revoke birthright citizenship, the court ruled 6-3 that district court judges’ countrywide injunctions “likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has granted to federal courts.”
The constitutionality of Trump’s executive order aiming to revoke automatic citizenship for children born in the United States was not decided by the highest court.
However, the wider rule on the scope of judicial decisions eliminates a significant obstacle to Trump’s frequently contentious legislative agenda and has significant implications for the judiciary’s capacity to hold Trump or future American presidents accountable.
