Azam Nazeer Tarar, the Federal Law Minister, stated on Friday that independent candidates cannot be given reserved seats until the Supreme Court (SC) has rendered a decision.
“The legal and constitutional position has now been clarified,” Tarar told Samaa TV. “Today’s decision is a review of the earlier ruling of the High Court,” he stated. “The decision was rendered by a majority of nine judges, and Justice Jamal has maintained his previous position.”
According to Tarar, reserved seats in provincial assemblies would follow the same procedure. He declared, “Legal decisions must be made on a constitutional basis.”
He reaffirmed that reserved seats are only available to political parties that are running in the general elections. He explained, “Independent candidates do not qualify for such positions.”
