In Karachi, the first known instance of rabies transmission from a cow to a human has been documented.
While grazing cattle last year, the patient, an 18-year-old Landhi farmer, was bitten on the hand and thumb by a cow. The cow, whose rabies infection was eventually verified, passed away soon after the incident.
The farmer’s life was saved at Indus Hospital because of timely medical attention. More than 21,000 dog bite incidents have been registered in Karachi this year alone, according to current health data. A lack of timely vaccination has resulted in sixteen fatalities.
In remote areas, health professionals were calling for rapid and extensive rabies vaccination efforts. To stop more cases, they emphasize the value of farmer education and animal monitoring.
