Thirteen-time PGA Tour winner Jordan Spieth was disqualified from the Genesis Invitational on Friday for signing for the incorrect score, which prevented him from winning a possible fourteenth time.
Spieth acknowledged the infraction, but a number of well-known figures in the sports industry defended him.
Pro beach volleyball player Ty Looms, golfer Ted Purdy, retired NHL referee Tim Peel, and longtime caddie Kip Henley all offered their opinions on the rule on X.
“Another benchmark in the dumbest rule in all of sports,” Henley stated.
Is this the most foolish thing ever? Nearly all of the shots are on TV. You really are living in the Stone Age, #PGA!” Peel composed.
“The most antiquated league in history is the @PGATOUR. They can’t even keep score with all the manpower and contemporary technologies at their disposal?” Written by Loomis.
Purdy, who is on the PING Tour, talked about his personal experience.
In professional golf, there’s no feeling worse than this one. It’s embarrassing and highly costly. Twice on the @PGATOUR, I did it. At @attproam, I once got Herb @Kohler, my amateur partner, and myself DQ’d. I have forgiven Herb, but I haven’t forgiven myself yet.”
