It was disclosed on the Politics at Jack and Sam’s podcast that Mr. Hunt was thinking about making a last-minute reduction to public spending in order to increase the tax giveaway in the spring budget.
Reiterating his position, Mr. Hunt addressed broadcasters on Monday, saying that countries with low taxes are “growing the fastest” and are “more dynamic, more energetic, more entrepreneurial.”
“We want to shift to a lower tax economy, but we will only do so in a responsible manner, acknowledging that there are expenses that taxes must cover and that we are unable to reduce taxes through borrowing,” he stated.
“We’ll carry it out sensibly. However, taxpayer pressure will decrease if we can allocate funds for public services more effectively.”
The Institute for Fiscal Studies’ head, Paul Johnson, stated on Sunday on Sky News that any tax cuts this week would need to be “undone” following the election.
