Bill Hader once joked about the 1980s film Elephant Man. However, years later, Ryan Gosling repeated an almost identical punchline, causing the internet to suspect the rocker stole the joke.
In the lead-up to this year’s Oscars, eagle-eyed watchers refer to one of the actor’s promotional appearances for Barbie, during which the interviewer asked him, “What movie makes you cry? I ask everyone this question, and The Notebook is the top movie that makes people cry.”
“Really, not Elephant Man?” He responded and doubled down after the reporter showed surprise, saying, “Elephant Man would be mine.”
At that point, the 43-year-old joked to W Magazine, “It’s too sad though. One time I saw it in the theatre, and halfway through, when Elephant Man took these brushes and was about to return them, this lady shouted.”
He went on, “The man behind me went ‘grab her Elephant Man’. And I realized he thought he was like Wolf Man or something,” adding, “It was like he’d been through the saddest thing imaginable, and he’s just like ‘grab her Elephant Man’.”
