A leading Haitian gangster was killed by police as political parties were close to completing the transition council.

Police shot and killed a well-known gang leader in Haiti who had escaped from jail earlier this month, just as political parties seemed to be drawing nearer to deciding on a transition council for the nation.

Ernst Julme, sometimes referred to as Ti Greg, was the leader of Delmas 95, a group affiliated with Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier.

According to sources and police who spoke to Reuters, Julme was shot by police in the Petion-Ville neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, one day after Makandal, another gang leader, was killed in what authorities believe to be a resurgence by vigilante group Bwa Kale.

Julme’s passing represents a blow for Cherizier’s “Viv Ansanm” gang alliance, which aims to seize additional territory in Port-au-Prince.

On March 3, a state of emergency was declared in Haiti following Cherizier’s call for criminal organizations to band together and remove Ariel Henry as prime minister.

Strong gangs had started attacking important government locations in Port-au-Prince on February 29. Gunmen had set fire to police stations, shut down the major international airports, and invaded the two largest prisons in the nation, freeing 4,000 prisoners.
