The Times reported that the backbench MP for Flyde in Lancashire had paid political donations to pay for medical bills and to settle debts with “bad people” who had locked him in an apartment and demanded thousands of pounds to get him out. As a result, the MP lost his position as the Conservative whip.
The Conservative Party has stated that it is investigating the reports and takes them seriously, but Mr. Menzies denies them.
