As the globe marks Press Freedom Day, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) declared on Friday that journalism in Pakistan is “under threat”.
Every year on May 3, the world observes World Press Freedom Day, which serves as a significant platform for promoting awareness of the value of free speech and journalism.
The goal of this year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” is to highlight the critical role that free speech and media play in light of the current global environmental catastrophe.
The 22nd annual South Asia Press Freedom Report, released by the IFJ on the same day, claims that journalists have turned into “punching bags” in the conflict between the establishment and former prime minister Imran Khan.
According to the article, some journalists were detained and are still being held, while sixty journalists received legal notices.
Eight journalists were accused of sedition, terrorism, and inciting violence, according to the report, which also stated that the majority of the charges were journalists who supported Imran Khan and his party.
