According to a new Oxford Internet Institute (OII) research of data from 168 countries, internet availability and use are consistently linked to good wellbeing.
New regulations have been sparked by worries about online hazards in several parts of the world, including the UK and the EU.
According to the OII, certain of its findings are “consistent” with linkages that have been observed between young women’s usage of social media and depressed symptoms.
However, it concludes that the overall advantages of the internet demonstrate that lawmakers considering more stringent legislation ought to be driven by statistics rather than anecdotes.
“I expect that this research will be perceived as being somewhat different from the current social discourse surrounding technology,” said Oxford University professor Andrew Przybylski, who oversaw the project.
