On Tuesday, Israeli tanks advanced farther into the eastern part of Rafah, entering several residential areas of the city on the southern border where over a million people sought refuge following seven months of fighting.
Israel’s diplomatic partners and humanitarian organizations have warned of a possible humanitarian disaster and repeatedly recommended against a ground invasion into the refugee-clogged Rafah.
The World Court, also called the International Court of Justice, announced that it will hear arguments on Thursday and Friday about a request by South Africa for more emergency measures in response to the Rafah incursion. According to Qatar, this has caused the negotiations for a ceasefire to stagnate.
The demand is a component of a lawsuit that South Africa filed against Israel, alleging that it violated the genocide convention in Gaza.
