The hurricane arrived and then left in one crazy night. Evacuee Cheyne Weir left for the town as soon as he was awakened. He passed enormous billboards that the wind had stripped bare. Next came trailer park houses, all of them seeming as though a bomb had exploded inside of them. He saw trees with their bark scraped off, their trunks newly covered in sheet metal, and the roofing shaped by the wind like simple tinfoil.
Hurricane Laura made landfall in Lake Charles, Louisiana in the wee hours of August 27, 2020, leaving behind devastation few locals had ever witnessed. Weir was headed back to his residence to see what remained now that the threat had passed.
