Officials warned Thursday that further rain was predicted over the next 24 hours, causing flash floods on Australia’s southeast coast to shut off communities and kill two people while isolating tens of thousands of residents.
The Hunter and Mid North Coast districts of New South Wales, the most populous state in Australia, had significant flooding in a number of rural communities, and the majority of the Mid North Coast region continued to see severe rainfall into Thursday.
A 63-year-old man’s body was located in a flooded house near Taree, which is nearly 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Sydney, according to police, while a body thought to be that of a missing man in his 30s was recovered in floodwaters on the Mid North Coast.
