A brief reprieve has been granted to more than 80 Afghan women enrolled on US-funded scholarships studying in Oman, which were canceled last month as a result of the Trump administration’s massive cuts to foreign aid.
According to a US State Department spokesperson who talked to the news, funding will last until June 30, 2025.
An unidentified student told the news, “This is great news, and we are very grateful,” out of concern for possible retaliation. “But I hope there will be a permanent solution.”
The woman ran away. Taliban ruled Afghanistan to continue their studies abroad, but the abrupt freeze on US Agency for International Development (USAID) funds put them at risk of being sent back.
