The loss of Murray, who withdrew from the competition on Friday due to sickness after playing 16 holes of his second round, cast a shade over the competition.
Murray “took his own life,” according to a statement released by his parents on Sunday, one day after the PGA Tour revealed on Saturday that the thirty-year-old had died.
“A super sad day in the golf world but my heart just goes out to him and his family,” stated Riley. “Today, there was undoubtedly something extra to play for.
“A sad day, and I have a heavy heart for his family.”
On Sunday, golfers and caddies honored Murray by wearing red and black ribbons on their shirts or caps. Murray frequently donned the Carolina Hurricanes’ colors for championship rounds of ice hockey.
