In addition to serving time in prison, paedophiles convicted of sexual offenses against children in Louisiana may soon be required to undergo surgical castration.
On Monday, lawmakers in the US finalized a bill that would enable judges to grant an order to anybody found guilty of specific serious sexual offenses against children under the age of 13.
Molestation, incest, and rape are some of these crimes.
In the event that the bill is passed into law, it will only apply to men and women whose crimes occurred on or after August 1st, 2018.
Since 2008, judges in Louisiana have the authority to order chemical castration for those found guilty of such offenses.
This approach lowers libido by using medications that prevent the generation of sex hormones.
Castration with surgery is a far more invasive process.
There are already laws in existence in a few additional states, such as California, Florida, and Texas, that permit chemical castration as a form of punishment.
Offenders in several of those states have the option to have the surgery if they so choose.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, no state permits judges to order full surgical castration.
