UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan was chosen Thursday, with a resounding majority, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the international body’s power center, promising to contribute to addressing the serious challenges the world faces. This election comes after months of intense campaigning.
Without opposition, Pakistan received 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, which is significantly more than the 124 votes needed to represent a two-thirds majority.
As the General Assembly’s president, Dennis Francis, announced the winners of the five non-permanent seats—Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia—to replace Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms expire on December 31, there was thunderous applause in the iconic hall of the assembly. He gave them his congratulations for winning.
Pakistan will take the position of Japan, which is presently the Asian representative.
