A Mauritanian state-run news agency said on Thursday that at least 89 migrants perished when their boat sank off the coast of Mauritania on Monday.
According to the organization, the migrants were on a big traditional fishing boat when it capsized, and the bodies of the migrants were discovered by Mauritanian Coast Guard officers. Nine people were saved by the Coast Guards, one of whom was a five-year-old girl.
According to information from the organization, survivors related that the boat was carrying migrants and was sailing towards Europe when it set out from the border between Gambia and Senegal six days prior.
The survivors went on to corroborate that the boat was carrying 170 passengers, meaning that 72 people were missing.
The event happened in the Atlantic Ocean around four kilometers (2.5 miles) off the shore.
