Torn apart by war As cholera and other fatal diseases spread, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an aid organization, has warned that Sudan is now “on the brink” of a public health calamity.
The Sudanese Health Ministry reported on Facebook that the majority of the new cases are in Khartoum state and that 172 people had died as a result of a cholera outbreak in just one week.
Drone attacks have caused power outages at water purification systems, forcing residents to use dirty water, according to local medics quoted by Sudanese media.
The civil conflict, which is currently in its third year, “is fuelling the resurgence of cholera,” according to Eatizaz Yousif, the IRC’s country director for Sudan.
