Following Colombia’s 1-0 victory against Uruguay to move on to the Copa América final, things got out of control when cameras showed Uruguay players—possibly led by Darwin Núñez—entering the stands and punching Colombia supporters.
At Charlotte, North Carolina’s Bank of America Stadium, security tried to keep players back, but things were getting too bad.
Videos of the altercation have surfaced, and Núñez appears to have punched multiple times, while José María Giménez, the Uruguayan defender, also looked to punch.
While some Colombian supporters threw objects into the battle, others fought back by throwing punches of their own.
Once the dust had settled, everyone was curious to know why Uruguayan players would charge into the stands and fight spectators. Giménez claimed that there was danger for the Uruguayan players’ families.
Families are seated in the stands, so please exercise caution. Giménez stated to Sports in a Spanish-to-English translation, “They stormed all our families, a certain sector of Colombia fans, and they won’t let us speak on the microphone.” Since I know I can, I’m going to say it right now. They will disconnect you if you don’t.
