On Thursday, the city government of Karachi placed the responsibility for the deaths of children who fell into a manhole in Malir’s Memon Goth neighborhood on the builder of the private housing society.
Three more children were found alive on Wednesday, but at least two had perished in the horrific event. The critically ill individuals that were saved were taken to the Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Center.
The manhole lid collapsed under the weight of the children, according to the police. The event happened during a Muharram sabeel in the Ghafoor slum where kids had assembled.
Since the colony lacks a functional sewage system, members of the private society have dug deep wells for sewage disposal.
This is not an isolated incident; falling has claimed the lives of at least 17 people. In an effort to improve security for the mourning processions on the 10th of Muharram, the provincial government had blocked cellphone services, so residents of the region had to rescue the youngsters on their own.
The names of the deceased are 4-year-old Hasnain and 10-year-old Taha Lashari. The other three are an unidentified 10-year-old child, Parvez, 11, and 7-year-old Saqib.
