The airline will no longer serve noodles to economy class passengers as of August 15. It stated that “burn incidents occur frequently” due to the increased risk of turbulence, the short aisles, and the close proximity of passengers.
However, first-class and business travelers will still be able to enjoy the treat.
Passengers have long loved the snack, and the airline is well-known for it. The fact that it is free upon request is highly praised.
The airline claimed in a statement that there has been twice as much turbulence on its flights since 2019.
The “risk of burns is greater with passengers crowded together,” it continued, adding that multiple bowls of noodles are supplied at once in economy class.
However, the refreshments are served individually to first-class and business-class customers, the company added, so there is less chance of spills in the event of turbulence.
On longer journeys, the Korean carrier had been giving away the noodles for free up until now.
However, pizza, corn dogs, sandwiches, and “Hot Pockets”—crusty pastries stuffed with cheese, meat, and veggies—will now take their place.
On social media, the decision generated debate. While some customers expressed relief, others drew attention to the fact that the carrier was still providing other potentially burn-causing things.
