Since incumbent Joe Biden pulled out of the campaign last month, the current vice president has emerged as the frontrunner to face Republican Donald Trump.
Ms Harris immediately gained the support of party heavyweights after the outgoing president endorsed her to run in his place, and she was the only contender to qualify for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Party delegates voted digitally this week, and Ms Harris’ team stated that she needed at least 2,350 votes to earn the nomination.
The online voting procedure does not end until Monday, but she has already passed it.
After attending the livestream event where the announcement was made, Ms Harris stated, “The power is with the people. We are going to win this election, and it will require all of us.”
Ms Harris will not officially accept the nomination until the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which runs from Monday, August 19 to Thursday, August 22.
She went on to say, “Later this month, we will gather in Chicago as one party to celebrate this historic moment together.”
