Kris Maharaj, 85, who was convicted of murdering two business associates in 1986, died in a jail hospital “after 38 years of fighting injustice,” according to his lawyer Clive Stafford Smith on X.
His wife, Marita, told News: “I promised Kris in 1976 that we would be together until death did us part, and I am devastated that he died alone in that dreadful location.
I want him returned to the UK for burial because the last place he would want to be is where he was wrongfully accused with murder.
Then I’ll devote the rest of the time God gives me to cleaning his name, so I can meet him in heaven with a clear conscience knowing I did my best for him.
Mr Maharaj, who was born in Trinidad but came to England in 1960, was found to be responsible for the deaths of father and son Derrick and Duane Moo Young in a Miami hotel room.
