The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology ordered the relevant authorities to address social media and internet slowdown concerns within two weeks on Thursday. The committee also requested a report on the losses resulting from the issue.
The committee members brought up the concern that social media and the internet could be impacted nationwide, which prompted the directives.
Participants in a meeting chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) included representatives from the IT ministry and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.
Committee members bemoaned the loss of companies that depended on IT infrastructure during today’s meeting, especially e-commerce companies.
“At least Rs 500 million has been lost due to internet delay… Senator Afnan Ullah Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stated, “Many e-commerce forums are leaving.”
