Daniel Abed Khalife is charged with escaping from the Category B jail on September 6, 2018, allegedly by securing himself beneath a food truck with bedsheets.
Three days later, the ex-soldier was apprehended and entered a not guilty plea to the charge of escaping from official custody. In October, he is scheduled to go on trial.
In the wake of Khalife’s purported escape, an audit revealed numerous security lapses at the prison, according to the annual report from HMP Wandsworth’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
Report released on Thursday stated that an audit conducted in November found “81 points of failure” included “antiquated” CCTV.
The IMB declared HMP Wandsworth to be a “failing prison” that was “constrained by staff absence and hindered by underfunding and a lack of support from the prison service” and demanded that the jail be placed under emergency measures in response to its “deeply concerning” findings.
