To address the agreement, which aims to “boost business and trade, deepen defense and security cooperation, and increase joint action on illegal migration,” the prime minister will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday.
Both parties hope to sign the treaty in early 2025, and Downing Street anticipates that talks will last six months. The treaty is referred to as “a key pillar of the UK’s wider reset with Europe.”
The UK “must turn a corner on Brexit and fix the broken relationships left behind,” Sir Keir stated in a statement prior to the trip.
The new deal with Germany is anticipated to cover a number of specific topics, such as market access, cooperation in science and technology, commerce across the North Sea, sustainable energy and energy security, and supply chain resilience.
Along with discussing intelligence cooperation, the two leaders will talk about taking on the people smuggling groups who are largely to blame for the illegal migration that occurs in Europe.
Sir Keir is scheduled to meet with Mr. Scholz, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the CEOs of Rheinmetall, a defense company, and Siemens, a technology corporation.
