The newly elected MP for Ilford South, Jas Athwal, owns fifteen rental apartments; nevertheless, some of his renters have complained that they must frequently clean their bathroom ceilings in order to get rid of mold.
A renter in an apartment building in Seven Kings, Redbridge, claimed in an investigation that was initially covered by the news that “there are ants everywhere,” including on their child’s body and clothes.
After seeing the properties, Conservative London Assembly member Andrew Boff told News that they are in “poor condition” and that there is “a risk to the residents” due to the lack of maintenance.
In answer to the question, Mr. Athwal said he was “shocked” to hear about the reported condition of his properties and added that a company was in charge of them and that they did not alert him to any problems.
He declared, “I’m a renters champion,” and that he was glad to rent out safe tenancy properties for lower than market rates.
I have asked the management agent for an explanation and quick action to resolve any issues because I am shocked by the stated condition of a few of the houses. I want every one of my tenants to enjoy wonderful accommodations.
