The 2,000-year-old Roman mosaic features fish and dolphins on vibrant red, blue, and white tiles, according to an English Heritage news release.
According to the news release, the ancient city was founded in the 90s AD and was formerly a bustling metropolis comparable in size to Pompeii. The city reportedly previously included more than 200 homes, a municipal bathhouse, a market, and more.
This new find has demonstrated that even though there are very few buildings still standing, there is still much to be unearthed. A large portion of the city has not yet been excavated.
According to a news release, English Heritage, the University of Birmingham, Vianova Archaeology & Heritage Services, and Albion Archaeology collaborated on the city’s excavations. The excavations involved thirty archaeologists.
The initial goal of the excavations was to find a possible location for the Civic Temple of the city, but far more was discovered than anticipated.
