Families have seen soaring costs for everything from groceries to prescription drugs under the Biden-Harris administration, but Vice President Kamala Harris suggested throughout the campaign trail that the best way to address this is to impose even greater federal control over every aspect of our economy. This is the reason these programs would be extremely costly for Americans and disastrous.
Despite her refusal to provide policy objectives on her website and her general avoidance of the media, Harris recently gave a speech laying out her priorities for the economy in three main areas: housing, healthcare, and food. Analyzing her suggestions reveals that they would.
Harris opened her speech by noting that under her term as vice president, “a loaf of bread costs 50% more” and “ground beef is up almost 50%.” She is correct; anyone who has visited a grocery shop has noticed that the costs of eggs, cereal, and many other necessities have increased in a comparable manner.
But rather than owning up to the misguided policies and unchecked government expenditures that had led to these hikes, Harris suggested enacting the “first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food.” Washington officials would have the authority to determine what constitutes gouging under this “ban,” or, to put it another way, what they believe the going rate should be.
