At a news conference held at the National news Club in Islamabad, the Pakistan Young Lawyers Forum for Judicial Reforms expressed support for the proposed 26th Constitutional Amendment, which calls for the creation of constitutional courts.
A representative representing the group, Arslan Ayaz, underlined that Pakistan desperately needs judicial reforms. He applauded the parliament’s attempts to work within the confines of the constitution on these improvements.
The proposed amendment calls for the establishment of constitutional courts that would sit independently of the Supreme Court and appoint justices for certain terms through parliamentary procedure. Ayaz pointed out that comparable constitutional courts exist in 70 different nations.
Ayaz further noted that the 2006 Charter of Democracy included the idea of constitutional courts, demonstrating the long-standing support for this reform.
