After the government said on Thursday that it was giving the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, concerns were raised about its commitment to keeping the British overseas territories a part of the United Kingdom.
The government is excluding talks on Gibraltar, which is claimed by Spain, and the Falkland Islands, which is claimed by Argentina, according to the official spokesperson for Sir Keir Starmer.
He stated that the British sovereignty over those two is unquestionable and cannot be negotiated.
After the news on Thursday regarding the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, the foreign minister of Argentina pledged to take “concrete action” to guarantee that Buenos Aires received the Falklands.
A spokeswoman for Sir Keir, however, stated: “We continue to maintain our position that the Falklands are not up for discussion.”
Chagos is a unique condition with a unique history, it has no influence on other regions.
According to Fabian Picardo, the chief minister of Gibraltar, the circumstances “are completely different” and there is “no possible read across” from the UK’s decision about the Chagos Islands to Gibraltar.
Falkland Islands governor Alison Blake stated the UK government’s commitment to the islanders’ UK sovereignty was “unwavering” and “remains undiminished.”.
