Reliving their “Miracle” moniker from the historic 1973 season, the Metropolitans defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of a division series to advance to the NLCS. They did it in spectacular way.
The huge hit did not come to the Mets right away. Despite loading the bases in the first and second innings, they failed to score any runs. They placed their first two runners on in the fifth, but Jeff Hoffman came to the rescue by pulling inherited runners.
In the sixth inning, the Mets again loaded the bases before an out was noted, and they scored again.
The most valuable player on the club, Francisco Lindor, who has performed admirably throughout this fairy tale, launched a grand slam to give New York a 4-1 lead.
In the ninth inning, Edwin Diaz entered to close it off and walked the first two batters he faced. However, after getting Brandon Marsh to fly out, he struck out Kody Clemens.
That brought up Kyle Schwarber, whose record as of October tells it everything. The closer struck him out seven times when he batted, and Schwarber went 0-for-9 with seven strikeouts going into the at-bat. The Mets won 4-1 after Schwarber missed an outside slider.
The Mets haven’t made it to the NLCS since winning the pennant in 2015.
