Why Saudi Arabia’s first women’s world title fight matters.

Over the past 12 months, Saudi Arabia has hosted some of the largest boxing events; this Saturday, the Kingdom will host a women's world title fight for the first time.

Skye Nicolson of Australia will defend her WBC featherweight title against Raven Chapman of Britain in Riyadh, on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev.

“As it joins the Riyadh Season train which is moving to a greater destination for boxing, this is a much-needed and big shot in the arm for women’s boxing,” promoter Eddie Hearn said to Sport.

The conflict takes place in the context of a country that human rights organizations have been denouncing for a long time, mainly for the way it treats women and minorities.

Britain’s current and future boxing stars, such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Moses Itauma, and Hamzah Sheeraz, have traveled to the resource-rich country to engage in lucrative bouts over the past year due to Saudi Arabia’s expanding influence and investment in the sport.

But on seven “Riyadh Season” cards—five in Saudi Arabia, one in Los Angeles, and one in London—female boxers have not appeared.
