Steve Borthwick announced Isiekwe’s 36-man squad for the fall internationals this week. Isiekwe underwent surgery for a dilated aorta at the end of 2022.
The 26-year-old claims that he now feels “a sense of pride” that he overcame such a crippling setback and is back to his peak physical condition.
He explained that it was a huge experience.
However, I believe that it has given me a sense of resilience.
I wouldn’t want the suffering and the consequences on anyone.
I think I’m feeling better than I have in a long time.
After making his debut as a 19-year-old in 2017, Siekwe has received 11 England caps. However, two years ago, an MRI revealed that his aorta had dangerously expanded, raising the possibility of an early retirement.
However, his career was saved by a pioneering treatment that involved splitting apart his breastbone, allowing him to play for England once more and win the Premiership with Saracens in 2023.
He claims that even though he recovered from the surgery very quickly, it took him some time to recuperate psychologically.
