With Section 144 prohibiting public meetings and protests in Punjab and Sindh capitals, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the main opposition party, has organized protests against the planned 26th constitutional amendment in key cities.
Police in Karachi resorted to using baton charges and firing tear gas shells on PTI members who had assembled near Empress Market to protest the government’s efforts to pass the controversial judiciary package. The scene was heated.
Although many of the roads leading to the Governor’s House were closed, a gathering of party faithful also assembled at the Karachi Press Club.
Because of the closure of arterial highways, Karachi police created an alternate traffic plan for commuters, which goes from Sharea Faisal’s FTC bridge to Metropole and the Coast Guard Office to Karachi.
