The largest gathering for environmental conservation, the United Nations biodiversity summit, gets underway in Cali, Colombia, today (Monday), with a request for “significant” investment to preserve the environment.
In a video speech, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on conference participants to “mobilize other sources of public and private finance” and to make “significant investment” in the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF).
The gathering began ceremoniously with Cali on high alert following threats from a guerrilla group on Sunday. The meeting is being held under the protection of thousands of Colombian police and soldiers, with assistance from UN and US security officers.
In order to assist nations in meeting the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which was adopted in Canada in 2022, the GBFF was established last year.
