Authorities in the northern Indian state of Haryana said on Tuesday that at least 16 farmers had been detained for burning illegal paddy stubble to clear fields, a practice that exacerbates air pollution in the area around New Delhi as winter approaches.
As temperatures drop and chilly air traps construction dust, car emissions, and smoke—much of which officials claim originates from the nearby breadbasket states of Punjab and Haryana—India’s national capital region struggles with pollution every year.
According to police in the Kaithal district of Haryana, 16 persons have been arrested and 22 reports of stubble burning have been filed this year, Reuters reported.
Those who were arrested were freed on bail, according to Birbhan, a deputy superintendent of police who goes by one name.
Investigations have been initiated.
