The guy passed away on Sunday at the facility close to Gatwick Airport in West Sussex, and the Home Office has expressed its sympathies to his family and friends.
The Brook House, which is run and maintained by Serco, was criticized as “prison architecture” by activists from the Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group on the news.
“No one should take their last breath there,” the gathering said.
Nearly a year has passed since a 37-year-old Albanian man who was being held in Brook House in November 2023 attempted suicide.
A public investigation into the holding facility found that migrants had been mistreated.
According to the investigation, during a five-month period in 2017, there were 19 instances of mistreatment against detainees.
The former Conservative administration nominated Kate Eves as the head of the inquiry, and she called for a “reset” on the “inadequate” reaction to her recommendations un September.
Amnesty International UK’s director of refugee and migrant rights, Steve Valdez-Symonds, expressed his sadness over the news that another individual has passed away at the Brook House detention facility.
“His family, friends, and other detainees impacted by this tragedy also have our deepest sympathies.
