ISLAMABAD The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice decided to add 25 Supreme Court justices in order to reduce the backlog of cases, despite resistance from the Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
It was decided to raise the authorized number of SC judges to 25, including the chief justice of Pakistan, during the meeting, which was chaired by Senator Farooq H. Naek.
The former ruling party and JUI-F MPs fiercely contested the decision during the committee’s meeting; PTI Senator Hamid Khan stated that they have serious concerns about the legislation. “Judicial independence is being attacked by this method of selecting SC judges,” he stated.
